Las Minenas (my version)
Las Meninas by Spanish master Diego Velasquez, circa 1656, has been interpreted many times by such artists as Picasso, Dali and others. It is with great pleasure to present my version, 362 years later.
Part I: Since all of these legendary paintings influenced my becoming an artist, I pay homage by placing these famous works into my world, my virtual studio. Most viewers can probably identify these world renowned images, except for #’s 7 &11, paintings by yours truly, still yet to be discovered/recognized….

Part II
The Filipino family is typically matriarchal, almost always dominated by the female members. In this setting, the spoiled child in the center of the painting looks annoyed, turning away from her doting mother, while the matriarch stands firm, controlling the situation. On the right, two maids wait in attendance. The lovers in the background, represented by “The Kiss”, is a family secret. Here, women wear traditional “baro’t at saya” clothing from the early 1900s, but the skirts are depicted in modern cubic style.

Las Meninas
RKBC stands for three artists who have inspired my work - Mark Rothko, Gustav Klimt, and from my native Philippines, Ben Cabrera. I juxtaposed his traditional female figures, embellished with Klimt's opulent gold leaf designs, against Rothko's abstract color fields. My titled subjects, with quaint names such as Soledad, Encarnacion and Saturnina, harken back to a more elegant moment in the Philippine culture. As such, I hope the viewer will experience a somewhat mystical counterpoint between the modern century and a time gone by, evoking a sense of serenity and spirituality.
